Dubai’s port innovation lands in London with DP World’s £170m upgrade
Fully automated system to transform container storage efficiency
DUBAI – DP World is set to transform container logistics in the UK with a £170 million investment in its London Gateway port, introducing the BOXBAY Empty Superstack system – a Dubai-born innovation that has already proven its capabilities at Jebel Ali Port.
The cutting-edge High Bay Storage (HBS) technology will fully automate the storage and movement of empty containers, offering a scalable solution for the modern port.
By utilising fully electric stacker cranes, the system can store 20- and 40-foot containers up to 16 tiers high within an enclosed facility. This approach not only maximises yard capacity but also improves operational safety and efficiency, marking a significant step forward in the digitalisation of port operations.
What is BOXBAY technology?
Developed by BOXBAY, a joint venture between DP World and Germany’s SMS group, the system automates container handling with precision. Stacker cranes retrieve and deliver containers seamlessly, integrating into existing port operations without altering landside or seaside interfaces. By removing multiple empty container tiers from the automated stacking crane (ASC) yard, rehandling and housekeeping are reduced, enabling faster truck turnaround times and a more productive terminal.
How will London Gateway benefit?
Installed at the new all-electric Berth 4, the BOXBAY Empty Superstack will hold up to 27,000 TEU. The system is expected to deliver substantial gains in operational efficiency, safety, and environmental performance. Construction is scheduled for completion in just over two years, making London Gateway one of the most advanced and sustainable ports in Europe.

Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO of DP World, said the technology represents a leap forward in container storage, combining scalability, automation, and sustainability. Stephen Whittingham, Executive Vice President, North Europe, highlighted that the £170 million investment would minimise truck visit times, enhance reliability for customers, and create a safer working environment.
Where has it been proven?
The BOXBAY system has already handled nearly 500,000 TEU during trials at Dubai’s Jebel Ali Port. Its modular design and energy regeneration features make it one of the most advanced and sustainable container handling systems globally, offering a model for future intelligent logistics.
